Alligator (1980)

Synopsis

Ramon the alligator is flushed down the toilet as a baby and grows into a gargantuan monster by eating the corpses of laboratory animals who have undergone dubious hormone experiments, thus providing all the ecological and social subtext that one could possibly wish for, even if one doesn’t normally go for films about giant alligators eating people left, right, and center–which is the inevitable and tragic result of Ramon’s decision that the outside world looks rather more interesting than the sewers…. Written by Michael Brooke {michael@everyman.demon.co.uk}

JC RATING/Thoughts: ***

Well, this has always been in my top 5 favorite JAWS rip-off/inspired/nature-runs-amok films. It has humor, graphic violence, and some serious alligator footage. I have fond memories of watching this on late night TV as a kid. If you haven’t seen it in years, or if you’ve never seen it period, you must check it out. It’s a real cult classic in the world of killer animal flicks!

  1. this is one of my all time favourite creature features. actually I rate it 2nd behind Jaws.

  2. Hey Matt,

    I totally agree. This is a true classic!

  3. Rorschach Says:

    I have to agree here…this is a cult classic film, and of all the JAWS imitators…hell, amongst ALL of the “animals attack” films in general…it’s in my top five. Great movie.

  4. ROBERT FELD Says:

    Alligator is probably one of the best in the Jaws genre. It’s entertaining and it links the idea of alligators / crocodiles in the sewers of a big city to the idea of toxic chemicals being dumped into areas they shouldn’t be. The link to Jaws is still there – a large, deadly and powerful predator, attacking and feasting on people.

    Oh, have you noticed that in a good number of jaws ripoffs, a leg is nearly always torn off ?

  5. Alligator wasn’t a rip off, it was a spoof!
